I read Kayla’s comment “I actually think it is (facebook) fairly dangerous tool, I mean I have a friend on facebook who has photos of her two year old son and he is naked in alot of them”. I must admit i am not an avid facebook user, i do happen to have an account, but i only got it so i could download some of my friend’s wedding photos she had put on their. I just dont really like the whole idea of all the information, personal or not, that ends up there and the huge amount of people (many of whom are total strangers) that can get access to all your private info.
It is a pretty cool tool for sharing information across the World, but God help me, i would NEVER put photos
of my naked son on their for the whole World to see. How crazy do you have to be. I mean its now banned to go to the beach and take photos…but here you are sir…here are some naked photos of my son for you to enjoy. BTW FYI my next post will be on a group of so called “lactivists” posting their boobage all over Facebook… Anyway in the meantime, getting back to my reaction… ““Today, if you choose not to do Facebook in college, you have all but chosen to be a social isolate.” So if you are not using this, this makes you something that is beneath talking to. How obscene is that?” Yes it is obscene but it looks like it is the way things are going… i suppose i too will be left out of the loop… I suppose in terms of our future students, we need to some how make them aware of such dangers and to be careful… they are definetly not going to stop using such systems, not that i would want them to, regardless of the dangers, they do seem to enjoy it and are connected to millions of people across the globe.
Along with everything else we need to teach them to be critical about, our students and children that is, we have to add this one to the pile…critical thinking and decision making…“do i really want my naked child on the internet?’, “do i really want the whole world, including my future employers, to be able to access images of me “puking” over the balcony of Gary’s parents house?”… critical, thats what we all need to be… God forbid we ever feel carefree or safe… i mean what are we… hippies?
